the case for change

The Haven Gateway Partnership is leading the campaign to improve the A120. Our view is that this route is not fit for purpose and with substantial growth pressures along its length for potentially up to 38,500 new jobs and 51,500 new homes, a clear plan backed by substantial early investment is now needed.

Our study suggests such improvements could generate an additional £1.3 billion of economic activity a year and offer journey time savings of up to 56% on certain sections. We therefore feel the case for improvement is strong.

We have many businesses and residents supporting our campaign and key national politicians are taking notice. Following a visit by the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP in February 2015, both the Prime Minister and the Chancellor made positive statements of support during the election period. After many years of campaigning, we finally received confirmation in the Budget of July 2015 of funding for a feasibility study for the stretch of road between Braintree and Marks Tey with the aim of getting the scheme into the 2020 – 2025 roads programme.

The video above illustrates these problems but also shows how the great potential of the corridor could be realised with the appropriate investment.
